There are many different ways to light up your photos, and many things to do it with. The list includes photography lights, softboxes, light meters, spotlights and floodlights. Photography lights are just basic, smaller lights to help your pictures look better. There are different lights in this category such as subject lights (for special focus on whatever you’re photographing), background lights (for extra lighting of your background, or just for accent in the picture), hair lights (which add spice to a photo of a person), facial lights (which accents the person’s face, but these are tricky to place), and full-body lights (which put special focus onto the subject’s body; not the same as a face light). Softboxes are lights that are put into the background of the studio, out of sight from the camera. These provide extra lights for things such as school photography. Light meters help measure how much light you’ll need to obtain the desired exposure for your photo. Spotlights can help accent the subject of your photography. Floodlights give a dramatic effect to your pictures.

Lighting Accessories

If you want to add more character than just lights to your pictures, there are accessories you can use. For one thing, there are lighting gels that help give the picture its own special design. Gels are put onto certain lights, and they color and design the background or the subject. For example, say you’re photographing a high-school senior and she wants to have something different. You can use a white or light gray background, and a striped pink gel on the background light. You can also put gel on the light for the subject’s body, but you don’t want to put the gel on the light for the subject’s face. These gels will stripe the subject’s background and body pink. The look can be very unique and special, and gels can be an automatic seller for pictures.
