Darkrooms

Introduction To Darkrooms

The darkroom is a room where a professional or amateur photographer can develop his or her own photographs. Darkrooms were quite popular when black and white photography was more prominent than it is today. Now because of the introduction and popularity of color photography darkrooms are not as popular. The reason for this is that the photographer is better able to control every step of the process when developing prints in black and white and is not able to control everything when developing in color. The name darkroom is actually a misnomer there is light in the darkroom and it is called the safelight. The safelight is usually a red or amber-color light that enables the photographer to see what they are doing without exposing the photographs. Because color photographic paper is much more sensitive to light than black and white paper, there is a safelight which actually emits very little light. But there is so little light that it is hard for photographers to see what they are doing. Many professional photography shops have their own darkrooms, which they rent out to photographers. Avid photographers prefer to develop their own photographs because it gives them greater control over the process and the final picture. The rates for renting out a darkroom are very reasonable and offer an alternative to those photographers who are unable or unwilling to build a darkroom of their own. Building a darkroom can be quite expensive. All of the necessary equipment needs to be bought in order to have a fully functional darkroom.

A lot of the standard equipment can be bought used from various photography dealers. Some other sources of second-hand equipment may be photographers who are selling their own darkroom equipment or are selling their entire darkroom. If the seller is putting their entire darkroom on the market, make sure that you need all of the materials they are trying to sell. If you don’t need them all, then there’s no reason to pay for the entire darkroom. Each darkroom will be different and tailored to meet the needs of a particular photographer. Most importantly, make sure that the equipment is in good working condition before you buy and that the seller is reputable. Building a darkroom does not necessary involve adding on to your house or building an new space on your property. Any room that you have where there are no windows or the windows can be blacked out to prevent light from coming in will be more than adequate for converting to a darkroom. For those with more money to spend, many chose to add onto their house a new space solely for the purpose of processing photographs. This is of course much more expensive but if done correctly the built darkroom can offer the owner a more suitable space that will meet his or her individual needs.
