Camera Filters

A camera filter is an apparatus that can be attached to the end of your camera lens to create a specific impression. Though some filters are square or rectangular in shape and can be used for lighting, the majority of filters are a glass or plastic lens surrounded by a metal ring that can fit easily on your camera lens to make a direct effect. The most important facet of a camera filter is that it gives added control to the photographer to specifically enhance the desired outcome. Whether you want added contrast, amplified white balance, or color correction, there are many filter choices on the market that will fulfill your precise need.

Special Effects Camera Filters

Some cameras, particularly digital, come equipped with ready to use special effects. You can change the color mode of your camera, add special graphics or text, or even distort the image you are photographing. For those cameras that are not manufactured with these built-in features, special effects filters can be used. Examples of special effects filters are cross screen or soft screen, which add a star effect where light is brightest in pictures. These filters are ideal for photographing jewelry or gemstones. Split field filters show one half of the picture with an up close effect, leaving the rest of the photo normal. Other special effects filters include sepia, intensifiers, softeners and infrared filters to contribute a variety of effects to your photos.

Digital Camera Filters

For those of you who prefer to use your digital camera for photography, a digital camera filter can be used to generate several different effects. However, many require a specific adapter in order to be attached properly to your camera. The most commonly desired effects for which people use digital camera filters are infrared, polarizers and neutral density. An infrared filter blocks visible light and enables the photographer to better capture outdoor scenes. Polarizing filters reduce glare coming from glassy surfaces like glass or water and neutral density filters block light but still produces natural colors. Whether you are snapping portraits of your friends and family or trying to capture a sunset over the lake, the correct filter makes all the difference. Most camera manufacturers also produce filters, creating a one-stop shopping experience that makes it easier and convenient for your photo needs. Whatever kind of picture you want to develop, a good filter is an imperative accessory.
